Freyja – the Goddess of Love and War
Freyja, also known as Freya or Freja, is a Norse Goddess. Since she is well known – and a very popular deity among witches – you may already know a thing or two about her.
Freyja is famous for being a goddess of love, beauty and fertility. However, there is more to her than meets the eye…
Interestingly, the goddess of love is also the goddess of war, which shows how complex and multifaceted her nature is. She rides a chariot pulled by two cats and isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty when it comes to a fight. Freyja is Queen of the Valkyries, a group of female warriors who serve Odin, the chief of the Norse gods.
The duality of Freyja’s character is in line with a theme often found in Norse mythology, which is the merging of seemingly opposing ideas. In this case, Freyja represents both the nurturing and protective aspects of love, as well as the fierce and fearless nature of battle.
As for magick, Freyja is associated with seidr, which is a form of Old Norse witchcraft that involves shamanic practices, divination, and connecting with the spirit world. Freyja is a master of this art, and taught it to other gods and goddesses.
In seidr, practitioners enter trance-like states to access hidden knowledge, foresee the future, or even influence events. Freyja’s expertise in this magic makes her a powerful and influential figure in the Norse pantheon.
Hecate – the Queen of the Crossroads
Hecate, or Hekate, is an ancient Greek goddess of witchcraft, and is a deity that many witches are drawn to. In Greek mythology, she is often depicted as a triple goddess, representing the phases of the moon: the maiden, the mother, and the crone.
Hecate is associated with crossroads, where paths meet and choices are made, symbolizing her role as a guide between the realms of the living and the dead. She’s the one you should contact if you want to communicate with ghosts, do lunar spellwork or just become better at performing witchcraft.
Hecate is a powerful figure in the world of magick and the occult, known for her wisdom, knowledge of herbs and poisons, and her ability to illuminate the hidden and mysterious. She can teach you the basics, or further your knowledge with advanced magick, depending on your requirements and skill level.
For beginners in witchcraft, it’s wise to be careful when working with Hecate. She’s a powerful goddess with many sides, and while she can teach you a lot, she is not one to nurture and coddle her practitioners. Some stories in Greek mythology depict Hecate as a deity who tests individuals on their magical journey, so if you decide to work with her, be prepared to face trials and challenges as part of your spiritual growth.
So if you do decide to work with this formidable witch goddess, be sure to do your research, show her respect as a deity and a teacher, and be ready for personal growth that may be turbulent at times!
Serket – the Scorpion Goddess
Serket, also known as Selket and even Selqet, is an Egyptian Goddess. She is the Goddess of “divine breath” and venomous animals, such as scorpions and snakes. Serket is often depicted as a woman with a scorpion on her head, or as a woman with a scorpion’s body and a woman’s head and arms.
Let’s start with the simplest fact. Since she is associated with venomous creatures, one of Serket’s areas of expertise is toxins and poisons. In Ancient Egypt, she was invoked to safeguard against scorpion stings and snake bites, and her image was used on protective amulets to ward off these dangers.
Serket is often seen as a witch goddess because she presides over the liminal space between life and death. She is known as the goddess who gives a baby their first breath of life, but also as the one who gives the kiss of death. This makes her very powerful in the eyes of those who practice witchcraft, as she holds sway over the most transformative moments in the human experience.
Isis – the Mistress of Magick
Isis, also known as Aset, is another Egyptian goddess. One of her titles is the Mistress of Magick, and she is much-loved by witches worldwide.
She was born to the sky goddess Nut and the earth god Geb, which gave her a strong connection to both heaven and earth (ie the spiritual and the material worlds) granting her powers in the realms of magick. She further developed her abilities through her determination and knowledge, learning the secrets of powerful spells and healing techniques.
Her most famous act was collecting the pieces of her husband Osiris after he was killed and torn apart. With her magical skills, she was able to bring him back to life for a short time and even conceive a child with him. This act showed her incredible magical abilities and her deep love for Osiris.
Isis is also associated with healing and protection. Witches turn to her for physical, emotional, and spiritual healing, as well as for protection from negative energies and harm.
She is also a mother goddess, associated with fertility and birth. Isis has strong nurturing qualities, and a deep love for humanity. There is a good reason that she is so popular among witches and practitioners of magick – she is willing to help almost everyone that goes to her.
So, if you would like to connect with a witch goddess that can teach you the arts of magick, while offering you protection and support, the goddess Isis is the perfect choice.
Circe – the Seductive Sorceress
Circe is a powerful witch in Greek mythology. Her place in the Greek pantheon is not as prominent as other deities, but as daughter of the sun god Helios and the Oceanid nymph Perse, she does qualify as a witch goddess.
If you are a green witch you may have a connection with her, whether you know it or not. Circe lends her power to everyone who has a love for the earth and mother nature.
Circe is an alluring seductress and enchantress, also known for her mastery of magical arts, particularly potions and transformative spells. Her most famous encounter occurs in the Greek epic “Odyssey” when she transforms some of Odysseus’s crew into pigs after they land on her island. Odysseus, with the help of the god Hermes, resists her enchantments and ultimately persuades Circe to release his crew.
She can help you with potions and herbs. She can also be invoked for protection against harmful enchantments, curses, or negative energies.
Proceed with some caution before you work with her, though. While she can be kind and willing to help us mortals, she isn’t always predictable and may have her own agenda. Respect her power and boundaries, or she may just turn you into a pig!
Final thoughts
Above all, remember that while witch goddesses can be helpful, you don’t need them to practice your craft. They’re there to assist, but you can do magick on your own too.
If you want their help, feel free to ask (bearing in mind to proceed with caution with some of the darker or more unpredictable deities). These goddesses can assist with many things, from love to protection, so use their guidance as needed.
But while the witch goddesses can be incredibly powerful, your personal magick is a force to be reckoned with too, and you have the capacity to manifest your intentions with or without them.
