This particular rune magick spell will offer protection from outside This rune protection spell uses Algiz (ᛉ), the Norse rune of protection, carved into a candle and surrounded by four elemental candles, to build a shield around you. It’s designed to protect you from harmful outside forces, but also from the forces within us. We don’t always need protection from the outside. Sometimes what we need is a boost of harmony within ourselves and with the people around us, and this spell builds a protective barrier on every front.
I’ve always loved runes, thanks to my Scandinavian family, and Algiz is one of the first runes I’d recommend to anyone wanting to bring them into their protection magick.
What is the Algiz rune?
Algiz at a glance:
- Symbol: ᛉ (a vertical line with two branches rising from its center, like a Y with a third line straight up the middle)
- Rune row: the 15th rune of the Elder Futhark, the oldest runic alphabet
- Also called: Elhaz, and in the Old English rune poem, Eolh (elk-sedge)
- Traditional meaning: protection, defense, shelter
- Modern associations: a shield, elk antlers, a hand raised in warning, a person reaching up to the divine
- Best used for: protection spells, warding, boundaries, and connecting with your higher self
Algiz is the classic rune of protection. Its shape is often read as an elk’s antlers, a raised open hand or a figure with arms lifted to the sky. All three images say the same thing: guarded, alert and connected to something greater than yourself. That’s what makes it so well suited to this spell, which protects you from what comes at you from outside and strengthens what holds you together from within.
What does the rune protection spell protect you from?
This spell works on two levels. Outwardly, it raises a protective barrier against negative energy, ill will and harmful influences. Inwardly, it calms fear, restores balance and helps you feel whole again, which in turn supports more harmonious relationships with the people around you. If you’ve been feeling unsettled, defensive or at odds with yourself or others, this is a good spell to reach for.
What you’ll need
- 5 small white candles
- An instrument to carve runes into the candles, such as a pin, a toothpick or a small knife
- Incense in any protection scent, such as cinnamon, myrrh or garden sage
- Salt
- Oil to dress your candles (optional). This can be any oil that makes you feel protected, a specially formulated protection blend, or your astrological sign essential oil.
How to cast the rune protection spell

- Choose one of the five candles to represent yourself. Carve the rune Algiz (ᛉ) into this candle, and write your name beneath it. If you’re using oil, dress all five candles now.
- Place the other four candles around your altar at the north, east, south and west points.
- Place the candle that represents you in the center of the other four.
- Spread your salt in a circle around the candles, and leave a small pinch of salt directly in front of you.
- Light your incense and clear your mind of all negative thoughts.
- Light the candle to the east and say:
Powers of Air, hear my call, grant me your protection, that is all I ask for!
- Light the candle to the south and say:
Powers of Fire, hear my call, grant me your protection, that is all I ask for!
- Light the candle to the west and say:
Powers of Water, hear my call, grant me your protection, that is all I ask for!
- Finally, light the candle to the north and say:
Powers of Earth, hear my call, grant me your protection, that is all I ask for!
- Look up to the skies and call out:
Powers of High, listen to my plea, may I always be protected by thee!
- Light your own candle and say:
Banish my fears! I light with your light, I am guarded, well-protected, and with a shield I rise!
- Stare into the flame and visualize a protective light surrounding you. The light is warm, glowing and soothing. Breathe in the light, and let it fill you with shining protection.
- Open your eyes and say (naming your own deity or deities in place of “the Divine” if you work with them):
Air protects me! Fire protects me! Water protects me! Earth protects me! The Divine protects me! I am whole again, with my shield I move on!
- Meditate until you feel comfortable and protected, then let the candles burn down, staying with them until they’re out.
- Bury any natural wax remains (bin paraffin ones), and sprinkle a small pinch of the ritual salt over the spot. Just a pinch is enough, as salt is hard on soil and plants.

Why the rune protection spell works
Why we always explain the why
At Witchcraftisan, we end every spell with the why. This library has been growing since 2011, when it began life as WiccanSpells.info, and its spells were written by practicing witches who knew their craft from the inside. We don’t want you to just follow a recipe. Once you understand why each ingredient, word and gesture is there (the history, the correspondences, the logic behind it), you can adapt any spell to your own life, swap in what you have to hand, and eventually write spells of your own. A spell you understand is a spell you own, and that’s the kind of witchcraft we believe in: informed, adaptable and entirely yours.
Why Algiz? The rune that bites back
Algiz is conventionally said to mean “elk,” but the truth is more interesting. Nobody recorded the rune’s original name, so “Algiz” is a modern reconstruction, and some scholars argue it never meant “elk” at all, but simply “protection” or “defense.”
The oldest surviving clue comes from the Old English rune poem, where this rune is called eolh-secg, “elk-sedge.” Elk-sedge is a fen grass with leaves so sharp that, as the poem puts it, it wounds grimly and burns with blood anyone who tries to grab it. That’s a very specific kind of protection: not a wall, but a boundary that defends itself. Anything that reaches for you with harmful intent gets cut.
The rune kept evolving after that. In the Viking Age’s Younger Futhark, its upside-down form became yr, the yew rune, tied to the evergreen tree of endurance. Its upright shape lived on as maðr, the rune for “human.” There’s something lovely in that: the protection rune and the human rune share the same outline, a person standing tall with their arms raised.
Why five candles and the four directions?
Calling the four elements at the four quarters (Air in the east, Fire in the south, Water in the west, Earth in the north) comes from Western ceremonial magick, but it echoes something much older in Norse cosmology. In the Prose Edda, the gods build the sky from the skull of the giant Ymir and set a dwarf under each of its four corners to hold it up: Austri, Vestri, Norðri and Suðri, whose names simply mean East, West, North and South.

When you place four candles around your own, you’re building that same structure in miniature: four guardians holding up the sky, with you at the center. The Norse called the human world Miðgarðr, Midgard, which literally means “the middle enclosure,” a protected space in the middle of everything. That’s exactly where this spell puts you.
Why carve the rune and your name?
Runes were made to be carved, cut into wood, bone, metal and stone, and the Old Norse word rún carries the sense of a secret or mystery. Carving a rune is an act of inscribing power into matter, not just drawing a symbol. Writing your name beneath it ties Algiz’s protection to you specifically, so the candle becomes a stand-in for you at the center of the circle.
Why salt?
Salt has been used to purify and preserve for as long as people have had it. Spread in a circle, it marks a boundary: inside is protected, outside stays out. The pinch left in front of you is your own share of that protection, which you return to the earth at the end.
Why the inner work matters
The final affirmation, “I am whole again,” is the heart of this spell. Much of what we experience as attack or negativity lands harder when we’re already depleted, anxious or out of balance with ourselves. By filling yourself with light before you close, the spell protects you from the inside out, so you’re not just shielded from the world but steadier within it, and kinder in how you meet the people around you.
Why bury what’s left?
Burying the remains returns the spell to the earth, grounding the work and letting it settle in. The final pinch of salt seals it, like closing a door behind you.
