To banish a ghost: This banishing incantation spell will help expel an unwanted ghost or spirit from your space. Before you do anything though, it’s worth figuring out what you’re actually dealing with. There’s a big difference between a spirit that’s just lost and confused versus one that’s actively hostile and doesn’t want to go. If you suspect the former, a gentle crossing-over ritual is going to serve you much better than a banishing – you’re not trying to fight it out, you’re helping it find the door.
For a spirit that genuinely won’t leave and is causing harm, here are some things that actually work alongside the incantation:
Salt lines and smoke. Salt at every threshold – doorways, windowsills, the works. This isn’t just folklore, it’s one of the most consistently reported methods across cultures. You can mix a water and salt in a spray bottle and spray all parts of your house using the incantation. Pair it with a smoke cleanse using sage, mugwort or frankincense, moving counterclockwise through the space while you work.
Disrupting attachment points. Ghosts tend to stick around because something is anchoring them: an object, a location, unresolved business. If you can identify and remove or cleanse that anchor, you’re already halfway there. Old furniture, inherited objects and photographs are the usual suspects.
Iron. Seriously underrated. Cold iron is a traditional ward against spirits across European folk magic. A piece of iron at the threshold or held during the working adds real weight to the banishing.
When you’re ready, use the following incantation with intention. Don’t just recite it, mean it:
“Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, your time here is over, your leaving a must. Be gone from the living, be gone from this space, return to your world and leave not a trace.“
Say it firmly, out loud, facing the area where activity is strongest. Repeat three times if needed.
For non-witches going the purely practical route, salt and smoke alone will handle a surprising amount. If activity continues, getting someone in to assess whether the disturbance has a non-supernatural cause first is genuinely good advice (drafts, infrasound and carbon monoxide have sent a lot of people chasing ghosts that weren’t there!)
