This is a simple Lammas ritual for a solitary practitioner. Lammas or Lughnasadh is the celebration of the first harvest of the year, and one of the eight sabbats of the year. It is a time to be thankful for the food on our table, and recognise that summer is coming to an end. At Lammas the Goddess is in her aspect as Harvest Mother. This spell is designed to help you reflect on the season, and give thanks to the goddess for the harvest.
For this Lammas spell you will need the following
- Your altar set up, or a quiet place to work.
- A yellow, orange or red taper candle.
- An ear of wheat
- Lammas Bread, or a locally made bread.
Optional- You can decorate your altar with items which reflect the season.
You can also sip wine when you eat the bread.
Lammas Eve Ritual
Lay out your tools on your altar. Begin by reflecting over the past season and on what you have achieved. Light the candle, which represents the goddess in her aspect as Harvest Mother, whilst saying the following-
Goddess of the grain
Goddess of the fertile land
Mother of the Harvest.
The ground is rich
The grain is mature
The fruit is ripe.
On the eve of Lammas
As the wheat is harvested
I give thanks to nature’s bounty.
Hold the ear of wheat and think about what it symbolises. Rub the wheat between your fingers until it separates into seeds . Blow the seeds gently into the air onto your altar, imitating the wind scattering seeds.
Tear off a piece of bread and say:
Many blessings I have been given, I count them now by this bread,
Mother of the Harvest, I thank you for this gift.
Eat the piece of bread. Take a moment to reflect and be thankful.
Thank the goddess and end your ritual.
